The things you need to manage your website content through WordPress:

  • URL address (your website address) to login to your admin panel. (It will likely end in: /wp-admin or /wp-login.php)
  • Your username and password

The user guide will assist you through the basics of adding and editing content in a pre-installed WordPress environment. Basic Guide for WordPress

Here is the WordPress user’s guide for a new user through the basics of adding and editing content in a pre-installed WordPress environment.  Whether as a website or as a content management system, this guide should assist you.

You will need the URL address (your website address) to login to your admin panel.  (It will likely end in: /wp-admin or /wp-login.php). And your username and password.


Login to Website

  1. Log in to your WordPress Administration Panel (Dashboard).

Update a News Section / Post

  1. Log in to your WordPress Administration Panel (Dashboard).
  2. Click the ‘Posts’ tab.
  3. Click the ‘Add New’ sub-tab
  4. Start filling in the blanks: enter your post title in the upper field, and enter your post body content in the main post editing box below it.
  5. As needed, select a category and the select whether when you want to ‘Publish’ the post.

  1. When you are ready, click ‘Publish’ button.

Update a Page

  1. Click the ‘Pages’ tab.
  2. To edit a page, simply click its title. You can also hover over the title and then click Edit.
  3. Click on the ‘Edit text block’. As need you can modify content.

  1. If you are copying and pasting content over from MS Word remember to clear formatting.
  2. Once you have finished editing the content click on the ‘Update’ button.

Adding images

  1. Before proceeding, log into WordPress and open the appropriate page or post for editing. Also, ensure that you know the name and location of the image to be added. Your image should be a JPG, GIF or PNG type file.

For example, it could be a file called pebble.jpg and could be located on your desktop or in your Pictures folder.

  1. Next, position the cursor carefully where the image is to be added. You are advised to position the cursor at the very start of a paragraph or heading (or blank line). It’s best to avoid positioning the cursor within text. You will be able to align the image relative to this position later.

  1. Click the ‘Add Media button’ (above the toolbars)
  2. Click ‘Upload Files’ if adding a new image (or Media Library if adding an image already uploaded).
  3. Click ‘Select Files’ and locate the file to be uploaded. WordPress will now import your image to its media library, ready to be used wherever needed.

  1. When the image has been uploaded, complete the options using the help notes further below. Then press the Insert into Page/Post button.
  2. Add Media dialog box Options
  3. Title: A short text description of the image
  4. Caption: Not required unless your design supports the display of image captions
  5. Alt Text: Usually the same as the title
  6. Description: Usually not required
  7. Alignment: As required. None usually works better when the image is positioned on a blank line (paragraph). Left and Right works best when the image is being positioned with text or headings. The available text will wrap around the image automatically. Center is often avoided.
  8. Link URL: Leave blank (None) or click File URL if the image is to be linked to a full size version. You can also link to any web address (URL) of your choice. This could be to another page in your website or an external web page.
  9. Size: Choose as required. If the sizes displayed are not appropriate for your design and layout, you may need to speak with your web designer. NB – If the image is too large for the containing element, this may cause the layout to break.
  10. Changing the options after an image has already been inserted…
  11. If you wish to edit the options for your image, click the image once and the quickly press the ‘Edit Image’ button which appears in the top left corner. A ‘Delete Image’ button is also available.

The Media Library

All the images uploaded to your website can be viewed and edited in tick Media in the left hand navigation menu of the dashboard to view


Update Landing Pages

Staging:

Username: your username

Password: your password


Duplicate Pages

  1. Click on the Pages link, in the left side panel menu.
  2. Hover over the Home link, then select Clone, to make a copy of the current Landing Page
  3. After you have cloned the page, the page will be saved as a draft.

  1. Click on the cloned page, so you can edit the page Title and link

  1. Change the title name, and then click on the Edit button to change the link (permalink). Delete the text, then click Ok. The link will update based on the title of the page.

Update Content

  1. To simplify things we have installed a visual composer for editing content.
  2. The only thing to keep in mind is if you are copy content over from Word or any other publishing software to clear formatting.
  3. Since titles, links and heading have been pre-styled, you will just need to copy and paste the formatting content.
  4. To edit, click on the Edit text block icon (Pencil)

  1. You can edit the text know directly, if you copy and pasting take note of what type of style is being used, i.e. H1, H2, H3, H4, H5 and H6

  1. Click on the Publish button or Update button.

WordPress Revision

  1. If you have made a mistake when updating a page. You can undo the error by scrolling to the bottom of the page to Revision.
  2. Select a date that is prior to the error.
  3. Then click on the Restore This Revision button.
