More white space
A lot of websites seem full of information and activity, too much clutter is bad news for website usability. It makes it hard to work out what the important key messages of the website are. Reducing the clutter and adding white space can make your website easier to use. It makes it easier to read. Make your key messages clear and don’t include details that will distract from them. Use white space to clearly separate each key message.
Make your text easy to scan
Not everything you have to say will be relevant to every user. Make sure that key ideas are stand-out and are easy to find. Organise your text with bulleted lists, sub-headings and short paragraphs. This will make it easier for users to scan past things that they are not interested in. Making your key messages separate and easily identifiable is great for website usability. As a result you minimise the chance of losing someone simply because they couldn’t find the information they were looking for.
Don’t have sound that autoplays
Video, motion and sound are all great ways to attract attention to your website, but when they play unexpectedly they are an intrusion and are a nightmare for your website usability. Most users will shut a webpage rather than figure out how to mute it. So make sure anything with sound is something that the user has to opt-in to.
Use links wisely
Overlinking and underlinking are both website usability mistakes that can lead to a poor user experience.
Over-linking: It’s important to give users credible information. Linking is a great way to show users where your insights are coming from. Over-linking however creates a distraction. Too many invites users to leave your page.
Under-linking: On the other side of overlinking, underlinking makes your information seem less credible. Interested readers may leave your site in the hope of verifying your information. The longer it takes them to find the source of your information, the more likely it is they will get distracted and not return to your website.
Don’t overuse animation or motion
Animation and motion are both great. They attract attention, make your page fun to use and help you stand out from the crowd. If you overuse them though, they become a distraction. Too much motion or animation makes it hard for a user to know what the focus of your page is. Make sure you only use animation to highlight or underline your key messages.

Website usability is all about making things easier for the user. A registration form that is long seems like hard work and can cost you a conversion. If a user has decided to contact you, don’t make it harder than it needs to be. In most cases the minimum information you need from a user is a name, a contact method and space for them to write a message. This allows people to ask the questions they want with a minimal amount of fuss and speeds up the process from lead to conversion. All in all it makes for a much better user experience.
