Developing a concept

These concepts offer the client different options when it comes to determining the look and feel of the website, as well as what colours and images will be used. Yet such choices must still keep in line with the business’ key ideas, messages, values and personality. The client will then pick one concept or choose parts of the different ideas presented to create an entirely new concept.

Drafting the concept

After the client has decided what concept fits best with the business, drafting begins.

  • Sitemap: Developing the sitemap involves outlining what the site’s internal pages are. It basically outlines the website’s hierarchy – for example, what sub-headings and information will be found under which main page category.
  • Wireframe: A wireframe sets out the structure of the web page. This includes determining where contact information and other messages are put to grab the most attention. Meanwhile, web designers will determine where the information is best placed to most effectively communicate the company’s key messages, values and ideas.

Once the client has seen the internal pages and wireframes, the project goes to build.

The building stage

Web developers start coding and applying the content and designs to web templates. This phase involves setting up a content management system, applying the designs previously created by the web designers to templates and deploying any functionality the website requires. The site is nearly ready for deployment

Your B2B website isn’t ready to go just yet! Reputable web developers generally have a test list which outlines a number of components that must be checked before the website goes live. At this stage of the process, web developers undertake cross-browser checks (that is, ensuring the website functions correctly in different internet browsers such as Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer) and checking for issues such as broken links. The website must also function correctly across a range of devices – from desktop computers to smartphones and iPads. If anything is not functioning correctly, developers will debug the site. Finally, the website is evaluated for security.
